Day 3 of the CUPE Convention

Today has been a day of reflection for me. A lot of stuff happened today. The important DVP seats were defeated. A quiet member found the courage to take a stand. These are important. But they are not what is on my mind.

What is on my mind is stereotypes.

We know it is wrong to stereotype people from equity-seeking groups. We, as a labour movement, are leaders in equity, social justice, and fair play. And yet understanding culture is often missing from our narratives. I’m still wrapping my head around some very complex ideas. Maybe I should leave that for now.

Tomorrow is the election for the Indigenous DVP seat. This is less complex. I’m excited to watch the nominations. I am also relieved I do not have another election for nearly a year!
