Vacation this year

For the last two consecutive years, my scheduled summer vacation has been interrupted by something significant. Each and every time I have put in leave requests at work since 2018, I have, without fail, had something impact my ability to rest and recover and just have time to myself. This year when I submitted my entire year of leave requests for 2020, I thought to myself, “I am not letting something happen to my rest time. I must have quiet time this year.”

Enter COVID-19.

Initially I thought of this as just another attack on my vacation time, but over the last few days, I’ve come to realize it’s a massive favour. I will not be able to accept any social engagements. I will not be able to attend any emergencies. I can’t travel anywhere and no unwanted guests can travel to me. I am, in fact, going to have all the time in the world to read, write, take pictures, and do a lot of nothing.

This year’s vacation is actually going to be the first restful time off I have had since 2017. Who knew COVID brought a gift?
